I/S Digital Literacies:  Socrative

Description

 

Socrative is an online assessment resource allowing users to generate quizzes, surveys and open-ended questions.  When activated, students can access a quiz by entering a class code.  As students complete the quiz the creator can see progression and results in real time.  Each time a quiz is run, it generates and saves a report showing a statistical breakdown of answers.  The creator can also see an answer distribution for each question.  The paid premium version of the program unlocks additional functionality and features that can be tailored to individual students.

Examples and Rationale

The ability to easily assess student knowledge is a useful skill in the classroom.  Socrative is a tool that offers this ability.  I have used the applet to assess the learning skills of my peers in an educational psychology class.  I could monitor how long it took for the class to progress through the survey and we were able to look at the distribution of answers together as a class.  It was an effective tool to conduct the survey and to document the results.  Used in this manner it allowed significant modification of the lesson task as judged with the SAMR framework (Peuntedura, 2013).  Within 10 minutes I was able to poll and monitor a group of 25 students and instantly display the results for discussion.

Socrative works as an excellent diagnostic or formative assessment tool that can assess a class’ learning quickly and simultaneously.  Feedback gained through assessment informs educators about the effectiveness of learning and can provide feedback to lesson design and implementation (Black, Harrison Lee, Marshall and Wiliam 2004 and Ontario Ministry of Education, 2010).  It can also be used to canvas the class for ideas and input.
